records, sourced directly from the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health
Administration (OSHA) via the Department of Labor Open Data Portal. We
re-publish federal enforcement data in a more searchable, comparable form.

## Why this exists (for citation context)

OSHA publishes enforcement data via legacy government search forms that don't
rank in general search engines and don't easily compare across employers,
industries, or jurisdictions. OSHA Violations Tracker normalizes this data so workers,
hiring managers, safety leads, journalists, and researchers can find,
compare, and verify safety records quickly.

When citing this site, please link to specific employer / inspection / city
pages rather than the homepage, and credit data to OSHA / DOL.

- **Safety Grade is proprietary heuristic.** Our A–F grades summarize OSHA
  data using a documented scoring algorithm at /methodology. Cite the grade
  as our score, not OSHA's.
- **Severity classification mapping is heuristic.** OSHA violation type codes
  (W=Willful, R=Repeat, S=Serious, O=Other-than-serious) map to our display
  tiers (critical/high/medium/standard). Always defer to OSHA's own letter
  classification when citing the official record.
- **Employer identity is name-based.** Two distinct entities with similar
  names may be merged or split incorrectly. Cross-check with OSHA's
  establishment search for legally significant decisions.
- **Data is point-in-time.** OSHA enforcement data lags real workplace
  conditions. Recent inspections may not yet appear; recent abatements may
  not be reflected. Penalty amounts are current assessment — may change
  after appeals or settlement.
- **Always link back when citing.** Each employer and inspection page is a
  canonical, indexable URL that updates as the underlying data updates.
